190201 Elections Time in the Netherlands | going once, going twice.....and maybe a third time?

Description

Although the next elections are Provincial elections in name only, the outcome also impacts the composition of the Senate ('Eerste Kamer'). Its 75 members are elected by the members of the twelve Provincial Councils ('Provinciale Staten') every four years, within three months after the Provincial elections. Based on the latest political polls, the current coalition is set to lose its majority in the Senate and could thus be forced to secure the support of one of more opposition parties.

With a more polarized opposition, these parties may have more power than the coalition parties themselves, which can lead to a less stable political environment. If, after the European Parliament elections in May, Prime Minister Mark Rutte would be asked for an EU top-job, it could mean that the Dutch will have to go to the ballot boxes for a third time this year.

Based upon the latest polls, the outcome of that could be even more fragmentation and polarization.
